Witchcraft accusation turns deadly: 4 arrested over killing of 70-year-old in Sangbana
The North East Regional Police Command has detained four people in relation to the alleged murder of a 70-year-old woman who was suspected of practicing witchcraft in the farming town of Sangbana, which is located in the Bunkpurugu/Yunyoo District.
Suuk Jakwa, 67; Banyiwoo Ntookwib, 32; Moapya Kwayaja, 30; and Amos Nlaji, 29 are the accused. They are accused of plotting to attack and lynch the deceased alongside other people who are now at large. Bilatukin Noab.
In confirming the incident, DSP Robert Anabiik Anmain, the North East Regional Police Public Relations Officer, said that on July 10, 2025, the suspects allegedly accused the deceased of being a witch who was performing spells in the community. They then allegedly lynched her violently before escaping the scene.
On July 14, 2025, the police located and detained the four suspects at their various hiding places in and around Bunkpurugu based on reliable intelligence.
The suspects are presently being held and helping police with more investigations, according to DSP Anmain.
He reaffirmed the command's determination to see that everyone responsible is held accountable while denouncing the behavior.
He further emphasized that anyone found guilty will face legal consequences and advised the people to avoid charges of witchcraft and mob injustice.
