Accra: Queenmother killed at naming ceremony in Gbawe
A naming ceremony in Gbawe Zero, a suburb of Accra, turned violent last Thursday when an unknown gunman shot and killed a queenmother.
Another woman was struck by a bullet during the event and is presently receiving treatment at the University of Ghana Hospital.
Pearl Naa Dodoowa Whitaker, 33, was a mother of two. According to those close to her, her enstoolment rites had been finished, and she was now awaiting coronation.
Her stool is Naa Agyinafo I in Papaase, a village on the Accra-Nsawam route. Police have since confirmed the event, stating that investigations are ongoing.

According to Odorkor Divisional Police Commander, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Kofi Sarpong, who visited the crime scene, a chief named Nii Ayi Solomon 44, also known as Ibrahim Ayi Kwashie Solomon in private life, came to report a shooting incident at his residence, where he was organising a naming ceremony for his newborn baby.

He added that the Chief stated that the program began at 10 a.m. and that by 4 p.m., individuals had begun to leave, leaving only a few people behind.

ACP Sarpong stated that at about 7 p.m., the Chief was dropping off one of the guests when someone approached him to inform him that there had been a gunshot incident at the naming ceremony place.

He stated that he went back home and discovered two females lying down, so he immediately organized a vehicle to transport them to the hospital.

Pearl's friend, Mary Hammond, said she was with the deceased when she was shot.
She said Pearl had served some of the guests in attendance before she decided to dismiss the caterer.
"She finally rented a car for her guest after a lengthy wait, and she returned to sit next to an ice chest," she added.

Mary claimed that she lifted Pearl and noticed blood dripping from her head as she started to yell for assistance.
