Security Guard Steals €5,600 From NHIS Head Office-FULL DETAILS

An Accra Circuit Court has convicted a security guard who stole €5,600 from the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) Head Office in Accra to seven years in prison.

40-year-old Samuel Nortey Botchway entered a guilty plea to three charges of theft and unauthorized entry. Isaac Addo presided over the court, which mandated that the sentences be served consecutively.

In three separate instances, Botchway acknowledged swiping a universal entrance card from his boss to enter the victim's workplace and steal the money.

He gave GH¢10,000 back to the police, but he utilized the remaining funds to pay for school tuition, buy food and beverages, renovate his room, and purchase a refrigerator, television, clothes, and shoes.

Following previous incidents, the victim installed a CCTV camera in his office, which led to the discovery of the crimes.

Botchway was seen stealing from the workplace in the video.

Judge Mr. Isaac Addo recognized Botchway's guilty plea, partial restitution, and his status as a first-time offender when he handed down the sentence.

The court, however, emphasized the deliberate character of the offense and the breach of trust, concluding that the offense called for a deterrent punishment.

Chief Inspector Jonas Lawer, who headed the prosecution, told the court that the victim, the Head of Administration at NHIS, had kept €5,740 in a drawer before traveling abroad.

On May 17 and 24, 2025, he discovered €3,300 and €1,300 thefts, respectively. On June 19, following the installation of a concealed camera, another €1,000 was discovered missing, leaving only €40.

Botchway was arrested based on the clip.
He admitted to frequently entering the victim's drawer with a stolen access card from the Head of Security's office.
